A worker was killed in an equipment-related accident Sunday on a drillship in the Gulf of Mexico, about 172 miles south of Port Fourchon, Louisiana.
According to a news release from the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, the worker was engaged in pipe-handling operations aboard the Petrobras 10,000 drillship when he was fatally injured. The safety bureau said the worker was positioned between a stanchion on the rig floor, with his back to the retracting skate, when the skate moved and its loading platform pinned the worker against the stanchion.
No other workers were injured, and the cause of the offshore accident was under investigation by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard.
The deceased worker was employed by Spencer Ogden Ltd. as a floorhand. The drillship where the incident occurred is owned by Transocean Ltd.
