August 15th, Nola.com reported a 33-year-old injured man was airlifted by a U.S. Coastguard rescue crew from a bulk freighter off the Louisiana Gulf Coast. The man was a crewmember of the freighter and fell while he was “in the bilge of the 630-foot Desert Hope bulk freighter” on Friday afternoon.
Coast Guard officials reported that the man was working on the bilge at the time of the accident and he had injured his right arm.
The bilge is the lowest part inside the ship that collects water and “other sometimes-hazardous liquids.”
The Coast Guard transported the injured man by helicopter to the Galveston Airport. From the airport he was taken to University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX.
