Lambert Zainey would like everyone to join us in honoring the men and women of the maritime industry on National Maritime Day, May 22, and during the Port of New Orleans’ Maritime Month celebrations.

May 22, 2019 is National Maritime Day, a national holiday created to commemorate the maritime industry’s contributions and recognize the hardworking men and women who serve in it.

For a state like Louisiana — with the world’s busiest port system — one day isn’t enough. So for the third year in a row, the Port of New Orleans Louisiana has proclaimed the entire month of May as “Maritime Month” in the city.

A Month of Special Events

Port NOLA will sponsor a monthlong series of events. In addition to National Maritime Day, the port has partnered with STEM NOLA (a nonprofit organization that works to expose, inspire and engage local young people about career opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM) to create a day of interaction for students in 3rd to 12th grade.

Celebrating National Maritime Day & NOLA Maritime Month

May 12 – 18 also happens to be National Police Week, and Port NOLA will take the opportunity to spotlight the great work done by the Harbor Police Department and their dedication to the safety and security of the people and facilities in the Port’s jurisdiction.

Local TV station WWL-TV is partnering with NOLA to air promotional ads along with a live broadcast from the Port featuring the station’s morning news team on the 22nd.

National Maritime Day was created by the U.S. Congress in 1933. Why May 22? It was on this date in 1819 that the American steamship Savannah set sail from Savannah, Georgia, to England on the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean using steam propulsion.

The Port of New Orleans

Located on the Mississippi River near the Gulf of Mexico, the Port of New Orleans has been in business for over 300 years. Today, Port NOLA is a major hub for American waterway trade, handling about 90 million tons of cargo, 50,000 barges and 1 million cruise passengers per year.

It’s the state’s only deep water container port, generating about $100 million in revenue annually. NOLA and the Port of South Louisiana combine to form one of the largest port systems in the world.

Let’s Thank U.S. Maritime Workers

Lambert Zainey would like to take this opportunity to thank the country’s maritime workers for their hard work and dedication to making America the great maritime nation that it is.

Our New Orleans maritime attorneys are committed to protecting the rights of maritime workers all across the United States. With over 40 years of experience, we understand the ins and outs of the maritime industry and the laws that govern maritime employers and employees.

If you are a maritime worker who has been injured in an accident while working on America’s inland waterways, port facilities, offshore platforms or the high seas, we urge you to reach out to the Lambert Firm without delay.
