Louisiana offers three motorcycle safety courses. There is the basic rider course for beginners, the intermediate course for experienced riders, and the advanced course for experts.

The basic rider motorcycle safety course is 15 and a half hours long. This motorcycle safety courses consists of classroom and outdoor training. The outdoor training covers basic maneuvering and practical skills that riders will need in everyday operation. The practical exercises are usually broken down over two sessions on Saturday and Sunday.  Riders will be able to practice on a safe, off-street environment.  Only motorcycles under 550cc are used in the basic rider course. The cost of the course is $100 without a personal motorcycle and $25 with a personal motorcycle.

Motorcycle Safety Courses Are Offered in Louisiana

The intermediate motorcycle safety course is for experienced riders who want additional training.  This course is five hours long.  Skills learned in this course include cornering, braking and evasive maneuvering techniques.  This motorcycle safety course allows for participants to share experiences and share techniques they use for risk management.  In order to qualify for this course, applicants must be properly licensed motorcyclists or graduates of the basic rider course.  The cost of the intermediate course is $100 using a course provided motorcycle or $25 with a personal motorcycle.

The advanced motorcycle safety course is for the expert motorcycle rider.  This is an eight hour course broken down into four hours of classroom learning and four hours of range training.  This course emphasizes self-assessment, risk management, rider behavior, rider strategies, overall skill development, advanced braking, cornering and swerving procedures and techniques.  To participate in this course, all motorcycles must be street legal including being registered, insured and inspected and the rider must be licensed.  The course costs $25 and participants are required to bring their own motorcycle.
