The construction industry is riddled with dangerous hazards that workers are exposed to each day on the job.  Whether a construction worker is working on a residential site, erecting a bridge, paving a roadway, or completing an excavation or demolition, he or she is exposed to hazardous activities and working conditions.

Construction Industry Hazards and Safety Recommendations

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, nearly 6.5 million people work at over 250,000 construction sites across the nation each day.  The fatal injury rate for the construction injury is higher than the national average in this category for all industries.  Because of these facts, OSHA has identified potential hazards for construction workers and recommends ways to reduce and eliminate construction-related hazards.

Construction jobs include various activities having to do with erection, alteration, and repair projects.  Some of the hazards associated with these activities include:

  • Falls
  • Trench collapse
  • Scaffold collapse
  • Electric shock
  • Lack of protective equipment
  • Repetitive motion injuries

Construction Hazard: Falls

OSHA reports that each year, falls account for the greatest number of construction related injuries and deaths.  In 2010, there were 264 fall fatalities (255 falls to lower level) out of 774 total fatalities in construction.   Factors involved in falls include:

  • Misuse or failure to use fall protection equipment
  • Unstable working surfaces
  • Human error

OSHA and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) – Construction Sector have created a nationwide outreach campaign to highlight and raise awareness about common fall hazards in construction.  The campaign’s purpose is to inform employees and employers in the construction industry of safety measures that can prevent falls from ladders, scaffolds and roofs and to ultimately save lives.
